Equations

Power number (Newton number, NpN_p)

In notes →
Np=PρNi3Di5N_p = \frac{P}{\rho N_i^3 D_i^5}
  • NpN_p — power number (Newton number — dimensionless power drawn to agitate the fluid at a given speed and impeller diameter, analogous to a drag coefficient), dimensionless
  • PP — power, in watts (W\text{W})
  • ρ\rho — density of the fluid, in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m3\text{kg/m}^3)
  • NiN_i — impeller rotational speed, in reciprocal seconds (s−1\text{s}^{-1})
  • DiD_i — impeller diameter, in metres (m\text{m})

Power in laminar flow

In notes →
P=KLμNi2Di3P = K_L \mu N_i^2 D_i^3
  • PP — power, in watts (W\text{W})
  • KLK_L — laminar power constant, a dimensionless constant depending on the geometry of the impeller and tank (blade pitch, blade shape, number of blades, vessel geometry)
  • μ\mu — dynamic viscosity of the fluid, in pascal-seconds (Pa⋅s\text{Pa} \cdot \text{s})
  • NiN_i — impeller rotational speed, in reciprocal seconds (s−1\text{s}^{-1})
  • DiD_i — impeller diameter, in metres (m\text{m})

Impeller tip speed

In notes →
vtip=πNiDiv_{tip} = \pi N_i D_i
  • vtipv_{tip} — impeller tip speed (maximum linear velocity at the blade edge — a proxy for the shear intensity cells experience near the impeller), in metres per second (m/s\text{m/s})
  • NiN_i — impeller rotational speed, in reciprocal seconds (s−1\text{s}^{-1})
  • DiD_i — impeller diameter, in metres (m\text{m})

Flow number (FlF_l / FQF_Q)

In notes →
Fl=QNiDi3F_l = \frac{Q}{N_i D_i^3}
  • FlF_l — flow number (also written FQF_Q — dimensionless measure of pumping capacity: how much fluid volume the impeller circulates per revolution), dimensionless
  • QQ — volumetric flow rate of fluid leaving the impeller blade, in cubic metres per second (m3/s\text{m}^3/\text{s})
  • NiN_i — impeller rotational speed, in reciprocal seconds (s−1\text{s}^{-1})
  • DiD_i — impeller diameter, in metres (m\text{m})

If power is given

In notes →
tm=5.9 DT2/3(ρVLP)1/3(DTDi)1/3t_m = 5.9\, D_T^{2/3} \left(\frac{\rho V_L}{P}\right)^{1/3} \left(\frac{D_T}{D_i}\right)^{1/3}
  • tmt_m — mixing time (time required for an added pulse of tracer/chemical to become homogeneously distributed through the vessel), in seconds (s\text{s})
  • DTD_T — tank diameter, in metres (m\text{m})
  • ρ\rho — density of the fluid, in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m3\text{kg/m}^3)
  • VLV_L — volume of liquid, in cubic metres (m3\text{m}^3)
  • PP — power, in watts (W\text{W})
  • DiD_i — impeller diameter, in metres (m\text{m})

If power number is given

In notes →
tm=5.4Ni(1Np)1/3(DTDi)2t_m = \frac{5.4}{N_i} \left(\frac{1}{N_p}\right)^{1/3} \left(\frac{D_T}{D_i}\right)^2
  • tmt_m — mixing time (time required for an added pulse of tracer/chemical to become homogeneously distributed through the vessel), in seconds (s\text{s})
  • NiN_i — impeller rotational speed, in reciprocal seconds (s−1\text{s}^{-1})
  • NpN_p — power number (dimensionless power drawn to agitate the fluid), dimensionless
  • DTD_T — tank diameter, in metres (m\text{m})
  • DiD_i — impeller diameter, in metres (m\text{m})
