Dilution rate, HRT, and washout

In notes →
D=FVHRT=VF=1DD = \frac{F}{V} \qquad\qquad \text{HRT} = \frac{V}{F} = \frac{1}{D}
  • DD — dilution rate (how fast the reactor volume is being flushed and replaced with fresh feed), h−1\text{h}^{-1}
  • FF — feed flow rate, L/h\text{L/h}
  • VV — reactor (working) volume, L\text{L}
  • HRT\text{HRT} — hydraulic retention time (average time a parcel of liquid spends in the reactor before it flows out — pure plumbing, no biology involved), h\text{h}
